Yugu Pavilion

Yugu Pavilion is built atop Helan Mountain in the northern part of Ganzhou city proper. It earned its name from the mountain’s lofty terrain and its solitary, verdant presence, and is a provincial-level key scenic area. The original construction date of Yugu Pavilion is unknown. During the Tang Dynasty, Li Mian, the prefect of Qianzhou, once climbed to the pavilion and looked northward, renaming it “Wangque” (Gazing at the Imperial Palace). After several cycles of destruction and reconstruction, it retained the name Yugu Pavilion. In 1983, it was rebuilt in the style of the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty. The pavilion has three stories, stands 17 meters tall, and covers an area of 300 square meters. Visitors who ascend Yugu Pavilion can enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

Appendix: “Partridge in the Sky” (Bodhisattva Barbarian) by Xin Qiji of the Southern Song Dynasty Below Yugu Pavilion flows the clear river water, In its midst how many travelers’ tears have fallen. Gazing northwest toward the capital Chang’an, Alas, countless mountains block the view. But green hills can’t stop the river’s flow; It heads east all the same. At dusk by the river my sorrow deepens, From deep in the hills I hear partridges cry.
