Ganzhou Museum

Ganzhou Museum was founded in 1960. In 1999, following the transition from a prefecture to a city-level administration, the Ganzhou Prefecture Museum and Ganzhou City Museum were merged to establish the new municipal Ganzhou Museum. In April 2006, the Ganzhou Cultural Relics Administration was formed, operating jointly with Ganzhou Museum and the Southern Jiangxi Hakka Museum under a single organizational structure, serving as a deputy division-level, fully state-funded public institution under the Ganzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, News and Publication. The museum houses a collection of over 20,000 ancient cultural relics and natural specimens, with particular strengths in ancient ceramics, calligraphy and paintings, as well as Hakka folk cultural artifacts.

Since its establishment, Ganzhou Museum has been located within cultural heritage sites such as Bajing Terrace, Confucius Temple, and Yugu Terrace. With the support of the municipal government, in September 2009, a new museum building was completed and opened to the public at No. 15 Xingguo Road. It features two permanent exhibitions: “Cradle of the Hakka – History and Culture of Ganzhou” and “Everlasting Glory – The Revolutionary History of the People of Ganzhou.”

To facilitate the museum’s upgrade and strive for national first-class status, with approval from the Ganzhou Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, in April 2013, the Ganzhou Natural Museum was merged into Ganzhou Museum. The under-construction project in Zhangjiang New District was upgraded and transformed into the new Ganzhou Museum building. The exhibition halls at the Xingguo Road site were redesigned to host a thematic exhibition on the revitalization and development of the Central Soviet Area.

The new Ganzhou Museum is situated at the intersection of Gan Kang Road and Changning Road on the west side of the Urban Central Park in Zhangjiang New District. It covers an area of 61 mu (approximately 4.07 hectares) with a total construction area of 28,500 square meters, including 10,300 square meters of exhibition space. On December 31, 2015, it began trial operations. Six exhibition halls — Cradle of the Hakka: Ganzhou, Ceramics of the Qilizhen Kiln in Ganzhou, Dinosaur Wonders, Bountiful Ganzhou, Botanical Garden, and the Science Popularization Hall for Earthquake Prevention and Disaster Reduction — were opened to the public free of charge.
