Xunpu Village

Xunpu Village is a small fishing village located in Donghai Community, Fengze District, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, about 10 kilometers from downtown Quanzhou. It is home to descendants of ancient Arabs. Though intermarriage with local Han people has occurred over generations, Central Asian cultural elements still remain, mainly reflected in the oyster shell houses and the unique headwear of Xunpu women. Xunpu women style their hair in buns adorned with fresh flowers and wear clove-shaped earrings, paired with large-sleeved blouses and wide-legged trousers, creating a distinctive local charm. The tradition of Xunpu women wearing “flower crowns and ivory chopsticks” in their hair originated from Central Asia and has been passed down since the Song Dynasty.

The women here wear beautiful flower crowns made of fresh flowers, clove-shaped earrings, and dress in large-sleeved blouses and wide-legged trousers, forming a unique local style. Together with the women of Hui’an and Meizhou, they are known as the Three Major Fishing Women of Fujian. The village also features unique vernacular dwellings called “oyster shell houses.”

Despite being close to modern life, the women here continue to faithfully maintain the lifestyle passed down through their ancestors’ generations.
