At the Quanzhou Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, you can admire numerous treasure-level intangible cultural heritage exhibits. The museum showcases 36 national, provincial, and municipal-level intangible cultural heritage projects from Quanzhou, with 22 physical displays, including Quanzhou color paper-cuts, Quanzhou lanterns, Dehua porcelain sculptures, Hui’an stone carvings, lacquered thread sculptures, Lushan Guo Buddha sculptures, tin carvings, Dacheng cloth carvings, Li Yaobao paper-cuttings, Yongchun paper-woven paintings, Jiang Jiawalk puppet head carvings, Lin Cunzhong paper-crafts, Jinjiang gold-thread paintings, Huian women’s costumes, Xunpu women’s customs, Jin Cang embroidery, Yongchun lacquered baskets, Quanzhou bamboo weaving, Shishi rice-paper paintings, Hui’an wood carvings, theatrical masks, and Quangang fishing boats, totaling over 400 exhibits. Among them, there are 6 national first-class cultural relics, over 50 non-renewable folk craft masterpieces, and more than 20 works by national-level arts and crafts masters.

The Quanzhou Art Museum was established in 1960 as a public cultural institution under the municipal government. Since the reform and opening-up, the museum has made significant contributions in promoting the Party’s policies, enlightening the public, advancing China’s outstanding traditional culture, organizing mass cultural activities, and providing guidance and training. In 2003, the State Council issued the “Regulations on the Management of Public Cultural and Sports Facilities.” The museum earnestly implemented the spirit of these regulations, actively built a public cultural service system, kept pace with the times, and achieved continuous growth. Its various constructions flourished, earning honors such as “National First-Class Mass Art Museum,” “National Advanced Public Cultural Facility Management Unit,” and “National First-Class Cultural Center” from the Ministry of Culture.

In recent years, with strong support from higher authorities, the museum has rapidly developed its facilities and equipment. In terms of infrastructure, the museum covers an area of 4.6 acres, with a construction area of 5,640 square meters, located in the center of the new urban district. The building investment was nearly 10 million yuan. Facilities include a theater, intangible cultural heritage museum, dance hall, music hall, training classrooms for various art forms, practice rooms, meeting rooms, reception rooms, archives, costume rooms, makeup rooms, and offices—fully meeting the needs of mass cultural activities.

Regarding equipment, the museum possesses advanced and comprehensive indoor and outdoor performance equipment, electronic information systems, modern technical tools, musical instruments, and transportation vehicles. Especially notable are its indoor and outdoor performance setups, which are the most extensive in the city. It includes one indoor theater, an outdoor stage of nearly 400 square meters, cutting-edge lighting and sound systems, and over 1,000 sets of performance costumes. In recent years, it has hosted numerous large-scale cultural performances in the city.

The museum currently operates under three titles: “One Museum, Two Centers” (Quanzhou Art Museum, Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center, and Southern Fujian Cultural Ecology Protection Center). Internal departments include the office, business division, intangible cultural heritage center, training center, and performance service center. The leadership consists of Director Guo Feiyue, Deputy Directors Ding Conghui and Zhuang Jianping.

In recent years, the museum has received over 60 collective and individual honors. Collectively, it has been awarded titles such as “National First-Class Mass Art Museum,” “National Advanced Public Cultural Facility Management Unit,” “National First-Class Cultural Center,” “Provincial Advanced Publicity and Cultural Unit,” “Municipal Civilized Unit,” and “Advanced Qualified Party Branch.” Individually, staff have been honored as National Model Workers, State Council Special Contribution Experts, National Outstanding Community Culture Counselors, Provincial and Municipal Model Workers, Provincial and Municipal Advanced Cultural Workers, Quanzhou Community Development Advanced Workers, Quanzhou New Long March Pioneers, and Outstanding CPC Members and Cadres of Quanzhou Municipal Agencies.

The museum currently has 12 full-time staff members, including 1 with senior professional title, 5 associate senior titles, and 4 intermediate titles. Nine hold bachelor’s degrees, and three hold associate degrees. Staff members fully leverage their expertise, achieving remarkable results in organizing, guiding, and supporting mass cultural activities. Works created and directed by museum professionals have won nearly 100 awards at the provincial level and above. Theater productions directed by museum staff have won the Ministry of Culture’s “Wenhua Director Award” three times, the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee’s “Five-One Project” Award three times, and the “Cao Yu Drama Award” twice. Museum-created works have also earned the Ministry of Culture’s “Mass Star Award” with one gold, two silver, four bronze, and two excellence awards, as well as one national “Four into Communities” Arts Performance Award.

As a government-established public cultural institution, undertaking public cultural initiatives is our unshirkable responsibility. In recent years, the museum has actively cooperated with higher authorities in organizing, planning, and implementing major cultural events across the city. In every significant cultural activity, it has played a leading role, becoming a backbone of the city’s mass cultural scene. Beyond government-assigned tasks, the museum leverages its strengths to create branded activities, achieving strong brand recognition.

The museum actively conducts in-house training and workshops, offering year-round classes in various art forms including vocal music, instrumental music, dance, fine arts, calligraphy, hosting, and creative writing.

In recent years, the museum has strengthened the protection and research of intangible cultural heritage, focusing on establishing the “Quanzhou Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum” and “Quanzhou Lantern Exhibition Room.” It carries out preservation and research work, builds and improves artistic archives, publishes museum journals, and conducts various research activities. In June 2011, the museum added the “Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center” and “Southern Fujian Cultural Ecology Protection Center,” further deepening its responsibilities in heritage preservation.
