The Stupa of Master Hongyi’s Relics

In March 1952, the "Stupa of Master Hongyi" was built on the western side of Mita Rock in Qingyuan Mountain, housing the master’s relics.

The stone stupa was constructed from the renowned Quanzhou white granite, and through meticulous carving, the entire structure embodies the regional architectural style of southern Fujian, featuring imitation wood-and-stone construction. The interior ceiling features a spider-web-like caisson ceiling with imitation wooden bracket sets, layered to enhance the spatial effect within the stupa. On the front wall is inlaid a bluish-gray rock carving of “Portrait of Master Hongyi,” a “tear-ink painting” created by Mr. Feng Zikai in a moment of sorrow. The inscription “Sorrow and Joy Intertwined” in front of the relics stupa is the master’s final calligraphy before his passing. The entire stone stupa blends seamlessly with the surrounding space, cliff inscriptions, and landscaped greenery, adding to its solemn and reverent atmosphere, evoking deep nostalgia among visitors. It was damaged during the Cultural Revolution but has since been restored. In March 1991, it was designated as a Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit of Fujian Province. On the left cliffside of the Master Hongyi Relics Stupa is an inscription by Zhao Puchu, President of the Buddhist Association of China: “Through the ages, the rivers and mountains retain their vestiges; a grove of wind and moon accompanies the eminent monk.” On the right are the stupas of Venerable Guangqia and Venerable Guangjing, former presidents of the Buddhist Federation of Singapore.

Location: Western side of Mita Rock, Qingyuan Mountain

Protected Area: East to the retaining wall, southeast to the ridgeline approximately 5 meters outside the heritage structure, south to Yangzhi Pavilion, west to the 71-meter contour line, north to approximately 7 meters outside the heritage structure, with a total area of 462 square meters.

Construction Control Zone: East to approximately 50 meters outside the heritage structure, south to approximately 65 meters outside the heritage structure, west to the 86-meter contour line, north to approximately 60 meters outside the heritage structure, including Shanquanju, Diecui Xuan, Hupao Tea House, and Ji Gong Hall, with a total area of 12,767 square meters.
