Guanyin Hall

The Guanyin Hall within the Yuxu Cave is dedicated to the Bodhisattva Guanyin or the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin. According to legend, during her time of spiritual practice in the human realm, a Buddha named Thousand-Light King Calm-Abiding Tathagata taught Guanyin Bodhisattva a sacred mantra — the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Unstinting Great Compassionate Heart Dharani (commonly referred to as the Great Compassion Mantra). Upon hearing this mantra, Guanyin was overjoyed and made a profound vow: “If I can bring benefit to all beings, may I be endowed with a thousand arms and a thousand eyes.” The thousand eyes symbolize omniscient illumination, and the thousand arms represent boundless capability. Thus, “She responds to prayers from thousands of places, and ceaselessly serves as a ferryboat for souls lost in the sea of suffering.”
