The Former Site of the Eastern Army Headquarters in Yulian & Old Ancestral House of the Zhang Family is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.

The Former Site of the Eastern Army Headquarters in Yulian & Old Ancestral House of the Zhang Family is located in Yulian Village, Xiayang Township, Mingxi County, dating back to 1934.

Description: Originally built in the first year of the Chongzhen era during the Ming Dynasty (1628), it was destroyed by bandits a few years later and rebuilt in the 28th year of the Kangxi era during the Qing Dynasty (1679). Yulian Village was a major assembly point during the Eastern Expedition—Battle of Sanming in the Agrarian Revolutionary period and served as the enemy’s rear base during the Second Revolutionary Civil War. When Peng Dehuai and Yang Shangkun led the Eastern Army and based their operations in Mingxi to capture Sha County, they established their headquarters at the Old Ancestral House of the Zhang Family in Yulian. On January 8, 1934, Peng Dehuai issued the “Order for the Third Corps to Advance on Sha County” here. On the morning of January 25, the Red Third Corps launched a general attack on the forces of Lu Xingbang in Sha County and achieved a great victory.

In 2018, the Former Site of the Eastern Army Headquarters in Yulian & Old Ancestral House of the Zhang Family was designated as part of the ninth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites by the People’s Government of Fujian Province.

Protected Area: Extending 60 meters outward to the east and south, and 40 meters outward to the west and north.

Yulian Village: A village bestowed its name by an emperor, Yulian Village in Xiayang Township, Mingxi County is located in the northeastern part of Mingxi County, about 55 kilometers from the county seat and 7.5 kilometers from the township government. The village office sits at an elevation of 460 meters, covering a total area of approximately 15.6 square kilometers, including 16,349 mu of forest and 1,383 mu of arable land. The per capita net income of farmers in 2012 was 7,551 yuan. In 2010, it was recognized as a provincial-level ecological civilization village, and in September 2012, it was named one of the first “Central Red Army Villages” in Sanming City by the Sanming Municipal Party Committee History Research Office.
