Former Site of the Aolong District Soviet Government
The former site of the Aolong District Soviet Government is a classic red tourism attraction.
The former site of the Aolong District Soviet Government is located in Aokeng Village, Xiafang Township, Mingxi County.
In July 1931, the Red Army came to Aolong from areas such as Jun Kou and Jiao Keng in Jianning. On March 7, 1932, part of the main force of the Red 3rd Army Corps entered Aolong again to establish a work zone, deploying troops to Xiafang, Aokeng, Longkeng, Zhushem, and Xindi (Xinjian) among other areas. After entering, the Red Army held mass meetings, promoted the “Ten Major Policies,” mobilized the masses to struggle against local tyrants and evil gentry, and encouraged locals to join the Red Army and form Red Guards and peasant associations, thereby restoring and consolidating the red political power at the district and township levels. By the end of December of that year, Xiafang held its first district-wide Soviet Congress, establishing the Aolong District Soviet Government under the Guihua County administration. The district Party committee and the district Soviet government were stationed at Guan Di Miao (the Temple of the God of War) in Aokeng Village, with Hu Donggou serving as the chairman of the district Soviet government. The Aolong District Soviet Government governed the township Soviet governments of Xiafang, Zhushem, Liyi, Longkeng, Xindi Yuan, and Gaoyang, along with various organizations such as district and township Red Guards and Poor Peasants’ Associations. In the winter of 1933, when the Nationalist Army launched the fifth “encirclement and suppression” campaign against the Central Soviet Area, cities like Taining fell one after another. To contain and block the enemy’s advance toward the Central Soviet Area, the Taining County Committee of the Communist Party of China and its offices finally withdrew from Long’an to Aokeng in Guihua County. Using Aokeng as their center, they led revolutionary activities across Taining’s Long’an and Aokeng, Xiafang, and Zhushem districts and townships. In August 1934, with the strategic relocation of the main Red Army forces, the district Soviet government ceased operations. Its members either joined the Red Army or formed local armed forces to engage in arduous guerrilla warfare.
The former site of the Aolong District Soviet Government in Guihua County was originally the Guan Di Miao (Temple of the God of War) in Aokeng Village. It is a Qing Dynasty wooden structure with a flush-gable roof, spanning three bays in width, surrounded by blue brick walls, and featuring a floor paved with blue bricks and stone slabs.
