Former Site of the Red Army’s Eastern Army Field Hospital

The former site of the Red Army’s Eastern Army Field Hospital is a classic red tourism attraction.

The former site of the Red Army’s Eastern Army Headquarters, the Zhang Family Ancestral Hall, is located in Yulian Village, Xiayang Township, Mingxi County.

In early January 1934, the Red Army’s Eastern Army once again entered Fujian to engage in combat. On January 4th, tens of thousands of troops from the Red Army’s Eastern Army set out from Baishui Town, Jiangxi, and gathered in Huixian City via Anyuan and Quanshang in Ninghua, then were stationed in areas such as Shaxi, Longhu, and Xiayang. In order to support the Red Army’s Eastern Army in their attack on Sha County, the command organ of the Ningqinggui Military Sub-district relocated from Qingquan to Huixian City and was reorganized as the Huixian Garrison District. On January 9th, 1934, the main force of the Red Army’s Eastern Army arrived in the Xiayang and Yulian areas, using Yulian as a base and rear area, setting up the command organ within the large ancestral house of the Zhang family in Yulian Village, and placing the field hospital inside the Zhang family ancestral hall “Yongmu Hall,” to direct combat operations and treat the wounded. On January 25th, after capturing Sha County, the commander Peng Dehuai and political commissar Yang Shangkun returned to Yulian Village, Xiayang Township, Mingxi, to direct and coordinate troop movements. Over 300 villagers from Yulian responded to the call to carry spoils of war from Sha County. On February 18th, the Red Army’s Eastern Army was ordered to return to the Guangchang area.

The Zhang Family Ancestral Hall, the former site of the Red Army’s Eastern Army Field Hospital, was built during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty. The structure faces south and is enclosed by walls, consisting of a courtyard, a central patio, an upper hall, and side rooms. The building is 15 meters wide and 21 meters deep. The upper hall is three bays wide, the patio spans two bays, and it features a post-and-lintel wooden structure. The central three bays house a shrine, with a flush gable roof.

It is located in the northeastern part of Mingxi County, 55 kilometers from the county seat and 7.5 kilometers from the township government. The village center sits at an elevation of 460 meters, covering a total area of approximately 15.6 square kilometers, including 16,349 mu of forest land and 1,383 mu of arable land.
