Former Residence of Peng Dehuai in Mingxi – Yang Family Mansion

The former residence of Peng Dehuai in Mingxi – Yang Family Mansion is a classic red tourism attraction.

The former residence of Peng Dehuai, known as the Yang Family Mansion, is located at No. 40 Sanyuan Lane, Xuefeng Town, Mingxi County.

In July 1933, following the strategic plan of the Central Revolutionary Military Commission, Peng Dehuai and Teng Daiyuan led the Red Army’s Eastern Army, primarily formed from the 3rd Red Army Corps, into the Ningqinggui Soviet Area to fight. While besieging the Quanshang Fort in Ninghua County, they first liberated Mingxi County on the 9th, freeing the entire areas of Mingxi and Qingliu, as well as a large portion of northeastern Ninghua. Leaders of the local militia in Mingxi County, such as Ye Dazeng and Yan Minghan, fled overnight to neighboring counties. After entering Mingxi, the Red Army’s Eastern Army set up a political department and headquarters in the county town, with Peng Dehuai residing in the Yang Family Mansion inside the East Gate (now No. 40 Sanyuan Lane, Xuefeng Town, Mingxi County).

During the Red Army’s Eastern Army campaign in the Ningqinggui region, Peng Dehuai and Teng Daiyuan reported the situation in the Qingliu and Mingxi areas to the Central Bureau of the Soviet Area and the leadership of the First Front Army of the Red Army, suggesting that personnel be sent to restore work in the Mingxi and Qingliu Soviet Areas. On July 20, Zhou Enlai and Zhu De, based on Peng Dehuai’s report to the Central Bureau of the Soviet Area and the leadership of the First Front Army, sent a telegram to Xiang Ying, pointing out that “the Eastern Army has occupied Qingliu and Guihua for many days, yet there is still no consolidated revolutionary regime within 350 kilometers. Please instruct the Fujian Provincial Committee, the Provincial Soviet, and the Provincial Military District to promptly dispatch work teams to carry out work.” On July 22 of the same month, the 46th meeting of the People's Committee of the Provisional Central Government of the Chinese Soviet Republic decided to instruct relevant departments and the Fujian Provincial Soviet Government to dispatch work teams to Qingliu, Mingxi, Quanshang, and Liancheng to restore work.

The former residence of Peng Dehuai, the Yang Family Mansion, was built in the 17th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty by Li Yun. It faces south and is rectangular in layout. The central axis, from north to south, consists of a courtyard wall, courtyard yard, lower hall, patio, and upper hall. The total width is 16 meters, the depth is 17 meters, covering an area of approximately 728 square meters, with wing rooms on both sides. There are drainage channels between the wing rooms and side rooms. The entire structure is enclosed by brick walls, and the interior features a pure wooden mortise-and-tenon construction with a gable and hip roof. The doors, windows, and beams are all adorned with carvings.
