Former Site of Mao Zedong’s Investigative Activities
The Former Site of Mao Zedong’s Investigative Activities is a cultural relic protection unit of Mingxi County and a classic red tourism destination.
The Wanchun Bridge at the Former Site of Mao Zedong’s Investigative Activities is located 300 meters northeast of the village committee office in Pingbu Village, Chengguan Township, Mingxi County.
On July 5, 1931, Mingxi County established a provisional red government — the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Committee of Guihua County, Chinese Soviet Republic. From July 6 to 9, the main forces of the First Red Army successively entered Mingxi County town. The Red Army set up work teams in Mingxi to carry out tasks such as fundraising, posted notices, wrote slogans, and promoted the necessity of establishing their own government and carrying out in-depth land reform among the poor masses. They also dismantled obstacles that hindered military operations, such as the city wall to the east of the county town. During this period, Mao Zedong, Zhu De, and others personally inspected and guided revolutionary work in the new area. To understand the conditions and local customs of Mingxi County, on the day he arrived, Mao borrowed the "Guihua County Annals" from the county’s People’s Education Hall, and also held a symposium with representatives of poor workers and peasants at the Four Sages Shrine. The next day, Mao Zedong and Zhu De held a mass rally under the persimmon tree at the entrance of Pingbu Village on the lawn. During his time in Mingxi, Mao also chatted with elderly poor farmers on the Wanchun Bridge in Pingbu Village, investigating the local commerce, paper-making industry, and people’s living conditions. He mobilized the masses to fight against local tyrants, distribute land, and carry out revolutionary struggles. He also asked the locals about the production and pricing of Mingxi meat jerky.
The Wanchun Bridge was built in the sixth year of the Chenghua reign during the Ming Dynasty (1470). It is a single-arch stone bridge with a covered corridor, oriented east-west, measuring 22 meters in length, 6 meters in width, and 5.7 meters in height. The bridge building has nine bays with 40 pillars. The caisson ceiling of the bridge building features exquisite carvings and has undergone restoration.
The Wanchun Bridge at the Former Site of Mao Zedong’s Investigative Activities was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Mingxi County by the Mingxi County People’s Government on April 21, 1999.
