Tomb of Chen Jian

The Tomb of Chen Jian is a cultural relic protection unit of Songxi County.

Tomb of Chen Jian: Located on Dalaishan Mountain, north of Yangdunping Natural Village, Shanxi Village, Zhengdun Town. Chen Jian (1084–1146), courtesy name Chongxiu, was a native of Songxi. He passed the imperial examination in the third year of Daguan during the Song Dynasty (1109). He served successively as Attendant Drafter of the Baowen Pavilion, Doctor of the Imperial College and Supervisor of the Record Offices of the Princes’ Residences, Vice Minister of Revenue, Censor, Deputy Director of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, and Attendant Drafter of the Weiyou Pavilion and Lecturer. The tomb is built against the mountain, covering an area of about 150 square meters, facing southeast and situated northwest, with a gourd-shaped layout. It is 10 meters wide and 15 meters deep, with three stone steps at the front. The tomb surface is paved with flagstones, and the mound is constructed with cobblestones. Protected area: extends 10 meters outward in all directions; construction control zone: extends 10 meters outward from the boundary of the protected area.

Chen Jian, (③Biography in Volume 9 “Biographies” of the Songxi County Annals, Kangxi Edition of Qing Dynasty.) Courtesy name Zhongxiu, he was a native of Chengguan, Songxi. A renowned Song Dynasty official who defended the nation against the Jin and protected the emperor. Born in 1084 during the Yuanfeng era of the Song.

In 1109 (Daguan era), he passed the imperial examination. Initially serving as Judicial Officer of Huaizhou, he carefully retried a prisoner accused of being a “notorious bandit” and sent over by a subordinate county. He uncovered the injustice and, fearless of power, judged the case impartially. The prefect admired his sharp competence and assigned him many difficult and major cases. Later, he was promoted to Professor of Gongzhou, Doctor of the Imperial College and Supervisor of the Record Offices of the Princes’ Residences, among other positions. Shanxi Village: Located in the southeastern part of Songxi County, Shanxi Village lies at the foot of the beautiful Zhanlu Mountain, five kilometers from the county seat. It consists of four groups and is a base village of the old revolutionary area, as well as a central pilot village for the county’s socialist new rural construction.
