Jian'ou Confucius Temple Jian'ou Confucius Temple is situated in the northeast corner of Jian'ou City. It was first built during the reign of Emperor Shenzong of the Song Dynasty (1068–1078) and has a history of over 800 years. The temple complex spans more than 10 acres and features over 10 architectural structures, including the Lingxing Gate, Buyun Bridge, Ban Pond, Front Hall, Dacheng Hall, Minglun Hall, Scripture Repository, and Chongsheng Shrine. These buildings follow the layout of the Confucius Temple in Qufu, Shandong, and are arranged across three courtyards along a central north-south axis stretching 800 meters. The temple is enclosed by high walls and adorned with ornamental gates, yellow tiles, and red walls, presenting a resplendent and magnificent sight. Though not as grand as the Confucius Temple in Qufu, Shandong, it is nonetheless considered the finest among the prefectural-level Confucius Temples in the eight Min regions. Yang Rong, Grand Tutor of the Ming Dynasty, once praised it as the “Grand Sight of the Southeast.”

Confucius (551–479 BC), whose given name was Qiu and courtesy name Zhongni, was a native of Zouyi (present-day southeastern Qufu, Shandong) in the State of Lu. He was a philosopher, educator, and statesman in the late Spring and Autumn period, the founder of Confucianism, and one of the most influential figures in Chinese history and culture. His impact extends globally, especially across Southeast Asia, making him one of the world’s cultural icons.

Confucius’ ancestors were the younger half-brother of King Zhou of the Shang Dynasty, Weizi Qi, who inherited the Shang lineage and was enfeoffed in the State of Song.
