Wanmulin

Wanmulin is a national nature reserve located in Fangdao Township, Jian'ou City, covering an area of 1,600 acres. It was established during the Yuan Dynasty when a local gentry member named Yang Daqing encouraged villagers to plant trees on the ancestral burial ground of the Yang family at Dadun Mountain under the incentive scheme: "Plant one tree on my mountain, and I will reward you with half a peck of grain." Within several years, the area flourished with lush trees, forming a dense forest. In 1958, the State Council designated Wanmulin as a key protected national sealed forest.

Wanmulin is covered with dense subtropical forests. Towering spruces with sturdy trunks reach toward the sky, while ancient vines as thick as bowls hang and twist overhead. The forest is especially rich in camphor and nanmu trees, including the massive yellow camphor tree with a diameter of 181 centimeters, a height of 34 meters, and an age of over 600 years. Other rare and precious species found here include cassia, michelia, lithocarpus, Chinese yew, and Chinese redbud. Wanmulin also produces abundant wild delicacies such as shiitake mushrooms, black fungus, white fungus, as well as medicinal herbs like codonopsis, gynura divaricata, spatholobus stem, fatsia, and schisandra. The forest is home to various nationally protected animals, including macaques, sambar deer, and black bears. Wanmulin serves not only as an important base for forestry scientific research but also as a scenic forest park suitable for visiting and exploration.
