Tongxian Ancient City Gate
Jian'ou in Fujian is a provincial-level historical and cultural city in Fujian Province. Tongxian Gate is one of the four ancient city gates still standing in Jian'ou and is a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit in Fujian. It was first built in the early Jianzhong era of the Tang Dynasty, around the early 880s AD, making it over 1,200 years old. Located by the Songxi River, historically Tongxian Gate also served as an important river port gateway of Jianzhou and Jianning Prefecture, acting as a key checkpoint into Fujian. The existing main wall structure was rebuilt in the 19th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1386), to prefectural specifications. The wall is 6 meters high, the gate opening is 4 meters high, 5 meters wide, and 24 meters deep.
