Mandarin Duck Lake is an artificial reservoir lake covering a water area of 940 mu. It is located in Xiaochiyuan, Jiangdun Village, Shunyang Township, was completed in 1975, and is classified as a medium-sized reservoir. Due to its well-preserved ecological environment, it has become a wintering habitat for migratory birds such as mandarin ducks and wild ducks in winter and spring, hence the name. The lake is 9 kilometers from the township center, with a total water and forest area of 34.5 square kilometers. The lake area includes 3,600 mu of primeval forest, where tall broadleaf trees block out the sky. Lush green mountains surround the lakeshore, creating an elegant and pristine environment. Pure mountain streams flow into the lake, resulting in crystal-clear waters. Boating on the lake, you’ll find yourself surrounded by vast blue waves and the reflection of the blue sky, as if traveling within a painting. The most beautiful mountain by Mandarin Duck Lake is Jiuxian Mountain. The mountain features nine peaks running parallel and is named after the legend of the “Nine Immortals.” The scenic area spans nearly 20 square kilometers. Jiuxian Mountain is covered with a large expanse of Huangshan pine trees in various shapes, especially notable for its spiral pines and lotus-shaped trunks. The primeval and secondary forests stretch as far as the eye can see, providing a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Jiuxian Mountain is known as the “Jin Yong Film and TV Scenic Spot.” Waterfalls formed by flowing streams further enhance the scenery. The 1979 edition of the Cihai (Chinese Encyclopedia) states: “Jiufeng Mountain, located in northern Fujian Province, runs from northeast to southwest, with its main peak, Jiuxian Mountain, situated east of Jian’ou County. The scenery is picturesque, making it a famous mountain in northern Fujian.” The mountain features “Ninety Peaks and Eighty-One Scenic Spots,” including representative sites such as the Three Sages Scripture Rock, Eight Immortals Peak,

Immortal’s Ladder, Guest-Greeting Pine, Immortal’s Cave, Sword-Testing Stone, Fairy’s Dressing Mirror, Nine-Turn Eighteen-Bend, the ruins of Huayan Temple at the Tanggan Ancient Temple, Red Army Cave, etc. It is often referred to as the “Little Huangshan” and attracts visitors all year round. China’s first ancient geographical “encyclopedia,” the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing), vividly describes the strange sights and tales of Jiuxian Mountain. The famous Ming Dynasty geographer, traveler, and writer Xu Xiake left the inscription “If you don’t climb Jiuxian Mountain, a hundred years of life are in vain” on the mountain, making it a rare and valuable tourism resource.

Suitable for self-driving tours. You can directly exit the highway at Dongfeng, then drive another 15 kilometers to reach the area. Alternatively, take a train to Jian’ou and then transfer to a bus to Shunyang Township.
