Residence of the Five Classics Doctor

The Residence of the Five Classics Doctor is a cultural heritage site protected by Jian'ou City.

The Residence of the Five Classics Doctor is located at Mofangqian in Jian'ou City and dates back to the Qing Dynasty.

It was first built in the sixth year of the Jingtai era of the Ming Dynasty (1455) for the Five Classics Doctor Lin. For generations, it was established by the government to honor Zhu Xi’s contributions to society, serving as a place to enshrine and worship the Master (Wen Gong). Originally, there was a wooden memorial archway in front of the main building. The eastern side of the archway bore the inscription “Prosperous Stars and Auspicious Clouds,” the western side read “Lofty as Mount Tai,” and the center displayed the words “Imperial Edict.” On the inner pillars on both sides of the archway hung carved wooden couplets — the left one reading “Descendants of the Esteemed Scholars of Huizhou” and the right one “Masters of Neo-Confucianism from Kaoting.” The building featured two gates and two courtyards, with wing rooms on both the eastern and western sides. Behind the wing rooms was a rear pavilion, which had additional rear rooms and kitchens on either side. The structure has been damaged and rebuilt multiple times. The original location of the archway was later used by the former Construction Bureau to build an office block; the former front garden site was repurposed by the Water Resources Bureau to construct staff dormitories; the first courtyard hall was divided and converted into residential houses by descendants due to the deteriorated condition of its beams; the rear garden area was occupied by the Construction Bureau to build dormitories. Currently, only the second courtyard hall remains, covering an area of 180 square meters. Protective boundary: within the surrounding walls. Construction control zone: extends 20 meters outward from the protected area.

The Residence of the Five Classics Doctor has been designated as part of the fourth batch of municipal-level cultural heritage sites protected by Jian'ou City.
