Fengtai County Sanligou Anti-Japanese Memorial Park is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.

Fengtai County Sanligou Anti-Japanese Memorial Park is located in Sanligou Community, Fenghuang Town, Fengtai County, on the banks of the Huai River. It was built in 2005 by the New Fourth Army Research Association of Fengtai County to commemorate the 84 villagers of Sanligou who were killed by the Japanese invaders during the War of Resistance. The memorial park covers an area of 1,200 square meters, and the site consists of a stone gate, a main monument, and a patriotic education base monument. It is surrounded by bluestone railings and shaded by greenery. The main memorial monument stands tall in the center of the park, reaching a height of 8.85 meters. The front of the monument is inscribed with “Monument to the Victims of the Sanligou Massacre by Japanese Invaders,” while the back provides an introduction to the “Sanligou Massacre.” The base of the monument is inlaid with the names of the 84 villagers who were killed. In front of the main monument is a small plaza that can accommodate over 200 people. The park is planted with various evergreen trees and flowers, including six ginkgo trees, symbolizing the 60th anniversary of the victory of the War of Resistance. Pine and cypress trees, as well as camphor trees, represent the everlasting spirit of the Chinese people’s resistance. Although the park is not large, it is compact, clean, solemn, and respectful.

Sanligou Village was one of the hardest-hit areas in Fengtai County during the War of Resistance. On the night of May 21, 1940, Japanese troops stationed in Tianjia’an took motorboats up the Huai River to attack Fengtai. Upon landing, they were ambushed by the Nationalist Anhui Provincial Security Sixth Regiment (referred to as the Sixth Regiment), which was lying in wait in Sanligou Village. During the clash, the Japanese forces suffered heavy casualties, prompting reinforcements from the Japanese troops stationed in Shou County to arrive quickly. Seeing that they were outnumbered, the Sixth Regiment withdrew. Enraged, the Japanese troops stormed into Sanligou Village and carried out a brutal retaliatory massacre. Out of the village’s population of over 500, 84 were killed and over a hundred injured. Nearly 500 houses were burned to the ground, and all belongings were looted. The Sanligou Anti-Japanese Memorial Park is another educational site in Huainan City, besides the Datong Ten Thousand Martyrs’ Pit, that records the atrocities committed by the Japanese invaders. It holds significant educational value and has had a wide social impact. Since its establishment, the Fengtai County Party Committee and County Government have extensively promoted the significance of the park, fully leveraging its role as an educational base to promote patriotism and cultivate national spirit. Every year on the Victory Day of the War of Resistance, the county’s propaganda department organizes government agencies, social organizations, factories, schools, Chengguan Town, and Sanligou Community in Fenghuang Town to hold solemn commemorative activities in various forms at the memorial park. These activities pay tribute to the victims, denounce, and condemn the crimes of the Japanese invaders. At the same time, the media is fully utilized to publicize the activities of the educational base, producing and broadcasting special documentaries on the “Sanligou Massacre,” performing related cultural programs, publishing historical materials and articles about the “Sanligou Massacre,” and organizing primary and secondary school students to visit the Sanligou Anti-Japanese Memorial Park to lay wreaths, pay tribute to the victims, and receive education on “remembering history and never forgetting national humiliation.” These efforts inspire young people to study hard and serve the country. In recent years, as the influence of the memorial park has grown, the number of visitors coming to pay their respects from both within and outside the county has increased year by year, with annual visitors exceeding ten thousand.

The Sanligou Anti-Japanese Memorial Park was designated as one of the first and second batches of municipal-level patriotic education bases in Huainan City in 2009 and 2015, respectively. It is under the administration of the Fengtai County Civil Affairs Bureau, with assistance from the Fengtai County New Fourth Army Research Association. The park has dedicated personnel for management and guided tours, and it is open to the public free of charge.
