Tomb of Li Bai
The Tomb of Li Bai is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a patriotic education base.
Anhui’s Dangtu County features beautiful mountains and clear waters, abundant natural resources, and a long history with splendid culture. At the foot of the verdant Qing Mountain lies the tomb of Li Bai (701–762), the great Tang Dynasty poet. Throughout his 62 years of a nomadic life, Li Bai was deeply attached to Dangtu and adored Qing Mountain. He enthusiastically praised the area in his poetry, leaving more than fifty literary works inspired by its landscape.
Nestled against the lush Daqing Mountain and facing the flowing Qing Mountain River, the Tomb of Li Bai Scenic Area is located between Ma’anshan City and Wuhu City. It is 7 kilometers from National Highway 205, 100 meters from the Ma’Wu Expressway, and 40 kilometers from Nanjing. Together with Caishi Jetty and Tianmen Mountain, it forms the Li Bai Cultural Tourism Route. Centered around the nationally protected Tomb of Li Bai, this 100-acre cultural tourism site is divided into three sections: front, middle, and back. Attractions include the Memorial Archway, Taibai Stele Forest, Qingyuan Pavilion, Taibai Shrine, Tomb of Li Bai, Shi Yong Pavilion, Qinglian Academy, and Bonsai Garden. The Taibai Stele Forest and the Tomb of Li Bai are the core highlights. Themed around eco-tourism and cultural tourism, the site offers leisure activities, appreciation of Li Bai’s poetry and calligraphy, garden art, and tributes to the poetic immortal. The tomb preserves the burial style of prominent figures from the Tang Dynasty. The Taibai Shrine and the Hall of Worship showcase the architectural style of clan ancestral halls from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, while the “Song Dynasty Stele” details Li Bai’s life, achievements, and poetic legacy. The Taibai Stele Forest features 106 stone tablets engraved with classic poems from various periods of Li Bai’s life, inscribed by renowned calligraphers such as Mao Zedong, Lu Xun, Guo Moruo, Yu Youren, Sha Menghai, Lin Sanzhi, Chu Tunan, Qi Gong, Chen Lifu, and Shen Peng. Blending poetry, calligraphy, and architecture, the stele forest is a masterpiece of cultural artistry.
Surrounded by forests and water, the Tomb of Li Bai Scenic Area enjoys a tranquil environment, with green pines and cypresses framing its white walls and black tiles. In spring, rhododendrons bloom; in summer, lotus flowers grace the pond; in autumn, sweet osmanthus fills the air; and in winter, wintersweet blossoms bloom. Pavilions, bamboo groves, and flowing streams create a harmonious and picturesque scene. The mountain behind the “Poet’s Soul” is lush and scenic, with beautiful forests, winding mountain paths, and birdsong echoing through the valleys. Viewed from the south, it resembles an unfolding lotus flower, graceful and elegant; from the north, it looks like twin celestial gates reaching toward the sky.
Today, the Tomb of Li Bai Scenic Area is a renowned cultural tourism destination in southern China, receiving around 300,000 domestic and international visitors annually. In 2006, it was designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the State Council. In 2008, it was rated as a National AAA-level Tourist Attraction and serves as a patriotic education base for Anhui Province, Ma’anshan City, and Dangtu County, as well as a model site for civilized city development in both Ma’anshan and Dangtu.

The Poetic Immortal Li Bai (February 8, 701 – December 762), courtesy name Taibai, also known as Qinglian Jushi (Immortal of the Green Lotus) or Zhexianren (The Banished Immortal), and nicknamed Li the Twelfth, was a Tang Dynasty poet, often referred to alongside Du Fu as “Li-Du.” Li Bai’s literary collection, Li Taibai Ji, includes masterpieces such as “Quiet Night Thought,” “Drinking Alone under the Moon,” and “Dreaming of the Goddess on Mount Tai and Bidding Farewell.” He reached unparalleled heights in ancient romantic literature, yuefu poetry, and the seven-character quatrain. His yuefu, song-style poems, and quatrains are considered his greatest achievements—bold and unrestrained, fresh and graceful, rich in imagination, marvelous in artistic conception, and exquisite in language.
