Chengxin Temple

Chengxin Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Chengxin Temple is located on the western side of Shibao Mountain at the southern foot of Hengshan. Originally known as the Hermitage, it gained fame as the retreat of Tao Hongjing, the "Prime Minister in the Mountains" during the Qi and Liang dynasties of the Southern Dynasties period.

Chengxin Temple was built on the former site of Tao Hongjing’s study hall. There are many historical relics related to Tao Hongjing here, among which the "Dan Furnace Cold Smoke," the site of his alchemy, is one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Gushu. By the Song Dynasty, the Taoist scholars who once practiced in Hengshan had no successors, but Buddhism quietly flourished here.

The Taoist hall gave way to a Buddhist gate, and the sacred mountain changed hands. In the eighth year of the Jiayou era of the Song Dynasty, the "deserted study site" had become a home for Buddhist monks. Tao Hongjing’s "Dan Furnace," "Five Wells," and "White Moon Pool" were all imbued by the monks with mystical powers to calm and focus the mind, leading to the site being renamed Chengxin Courtyard. In the early Ming Dynasty, during the Hongwu era, it was officially named "Chengxin Temple." It remained one of the key temples in the county through the Qing Dynasty. Chengxin Temple was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and has been rebuilt in recent years with funds raised by the public. Admission & Opening Hours

Transportation

Located on the western side of Shibao Mountain at the southern foot of Hengshan in Dangtu County, it can be reached by taking a minibus from Ma'anshan to Dalong or Huangchi.
