Duke Huan’s Well

Duke Huan’s Well is located on Mount Baizhu, five li east of Dangtu County. Historical records from the 3rd century state that when Huan Wen, Grand Marshal of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, was stationed in Gushu, local people dug the well overnight. Coincidentally, there was an underground spring, and water flowed ceaselessly, clear to the bottom—thus it was named “Duke Huan’s Well.” Legend also has it that Huan Wen once watered his horses here, so it is also called Horse-Watering Spring. Poets such as Tang Dynasty’s Li Bai and Song Dynasty’s Wang Anshi have composed poems praising Duke Huan’s Well.
