Established in 1995, the Banqiao Nature Reserve spans 63 square kilometers and preserves over 50,000 acres of lush natural sweetgum forests. It is the best-preserved and most intact primeval forest on the northeastern edge of the subtropical zone, home to more than ten species of nationally protected plants and nearly thirty species of national first- and second-class protected animals, as well as nearly a thousand species of provincially protected animals. The reserve boasts expansive sweetgum forests that are considered a unique wonder of China, along with a variety of rare plants and animals such as clouded leopards, milu deer, leopards, giant salamanders, and ring-necked pheasants. Experts have called it “a kingdom of flora and fauna, a hall of biodiversity and genetic treasury, and a precious pristine land.”

The Banqiao Nature Reserve currently preserves over 50,000 acres of lush natural sweetgum forests, the best-preserved and most intact primeval forest on the northeastern edge of the subtropical zone. It is home to more than ten species of nationally protected plants and nearly thirty species of national first- and second-class protected animals, as well as nearly a thousand species of provincially protected animals. The area features expansive sweetgum forests considered a unique wonder of China, along with a variety of rare plants and animals such as clouded leopards, milu deer, leopards, giant salamanders, and ring-necked pheasants. Experts have called it “a kingdom of flora and fauna, a hall of biodiversity and genetic treasury, and a precious pristine land.” The reserve offers rich landscapes, represented by the Ten Scenic Spots of Gaofeng, integrating peaks, water, rocks, caves, flowers, trees, birds, and animals. With its beautiful natural environment and pleasant scenery, it is highly suitable for eco-tourism, sightseeing, and vacationing. The main peak within the Banqiao Nature Reserve stands at an elevation of 1,153 meters and features well-preserved primeval forests with extremely high concentrations of negative oxygen ions and over a thousand species of vascular plants.

The Banqiao Nature Reserve contains a large karst cave — the Xishan Cave. Upon entering the cave entrance, you’ll find a hall large enough to accommodate around a hundred people. Above the hall is a small square opening, and the interior is well-lit, with flocks of bats constantly flying back and forth. Crawling past a one-meter-high cave wall leads to an even larger hall, where massive stalactites hang unevenly, resembling crystal chandeliers in a living room. From the damp, deep abyss comes a soft, crisp splashing sound that is hard to describe. A small stream runs through the cave, with crystal-clear water that appears intermittently. To this day, no one has been able to accurately determine how deep the cave really is.

Everything in the Banqiao Nature Reserve bears no trace of artificial carving — it is all so pristine and natural, always giving off a sense of profound and unfathomable mystery. Its simple yet captivating natural scenery could easily become a highlight along the forest nature tourism route of southern Anhui in today’s era of tourism development.
