Ningbo Guan Yu Temple

The Ningbo Guan Yu Temple is a cultural heritage site protected by Haishu District.

The Guan Yu Temple was first built in the third year of the Chongzhen reign during the Ming Dynasty (1630) and was rebuilt during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1662–1722). It consists of a main gate, a theater stage, a main hall, and side chambers on the left and right. The main gate is built in the style of a memorial archway, the theater has a single-eave hip-and-gable roof, and its interior features a spiral caisson ceiling. The main hall is five bays wide and four bays deep, with front and rear corridors. It was renovated in 1990 and turned into a cultural market. In 2004, it underwent another round of restoration and was connected to the Buddhist Laymen's Forest, forming a Buddhist cultural park and becoming yet another cultural landmark in the Moon Lake scenic area.

Guan Yu (162?–220), of Han ethnicity, was born during the Yanxi era of Emperor Huan of the Eastern Han Dynasty. His courtesy name was Yunchang, originally Changsheng, and he was a native of Xieliang in Hedong (present-day Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province). He was a famous general of the Shu Han kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period, serving as General of the Vanguard and Marquis of Hanshou, as well as a military strategist. After his death, he was widely venerated by the people and honored by successive imperial courts, eventually being worshipped as the God of War, Guan Sheng Di Jun. In Buddhism, he is known as Sangharama Bodhisattva and respectfully called “Guan Gong.” Later rulers revered him as the “Martial Saint,” placing him on par with Confucius, the “Civil Saint.”
