Yintai Mansion Museum

The Yintai Mansion Museum is a cultural relic protection unit of Ningbo City.

The Yintai Mansion Museum is located by Yan Yue Embankment in Moon Lake, downtown Ningbo. It was the residence of Tong Huai, who served as the Vice Minister of the Board of Transmission during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty and was also the tutor of Emperor Guangxu, earning it the title "Former Residence of an Imperial Tutor."

The Yintai Mansion faces south toward Moon Lake. Its current layout along the central axis includes a front gate hall, main hall, principal building, and rear hall, with wing rooms and book towers on the east and west sides. The site covers approximately 2,300 square meters. The architectural layout is well-organized, with rational spatial arrangement, refined materials, and decorative elements that reflect a strong local style. It is a typical example of official residences in Ningbo from the mid to late Qing Dynasty. The scene displays in the Yintai Mansion Museum comprehensively present the living environment, home artistry, and the social dynamics and relationships of official-scholar families during this period.

The main structure of the Yintai Mansion was preserved intact during the first phase of construction in the Moon Lake Historical and Cultural Scenic Area and has been restored to its original appearance. Through scene-based displays—including the Shengwu Hall (main hall), Jinbaihua Hall (ancestral worship hall), study, council room, family school, banquet hall, elegant leisure room, bath room, embroidery room, bedroom, and Buddhist shrine—the museum offers a holistic view of the living conditions, home aesthetics, social aspects, and cultural values of official-scholar families during that era. This provides insight into ancient Chinese official mansion architecture, Qing Dynasty furniture artistry, the lifestyle of official households, and their intrinsic cultural significance, thereby deepening our understanding of Chinese history.
