Former Residence of Jiang Jieqing

The former residence of Jiang Jieqing is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Jiang Jieqing is located on the east side of Chrysanthemum Islet in Moon Lake, bordering the lake to the west and facing south. It consists of two three-courtyard complexes — a front building and a rear building — along with wing rooms. This site is a municipal-level cultural heritage landmark. The upper part of the main gate features Western-style brick decorations including short columns, pendant brackets, arches, and chrysanthemum motifs. The main building is a hip-roofed structure with three bays and two lanes in width, and a depth of two pillars, featuring a front porch and exquisitely crafted iron railings with floral patterns. Wing rooms are situated on the east and west sides. The rear building resembles the front one in external appearance, but is lower in height, smaller in size, and simpler in construction. The gable walls of the entire complex are finished with cement plastering in the style of Guanyin’s hood with shoulders — a common feature in residential buildings of the Republican era — and the walls are exposed brick. There are side gates on the east and west.

History of the Residence

The Jiang residence was built in 1928 by Jiang Jieqing when he served as the Supervisor of Zhejiang Customs. At that time, the Ningbo office of Zhejiang Customs was located in the original municipal government site, east of Gulou and north of Moon Lake. After Jiang Jieqing's death, the residence continued to be inhabited by family members. After the liberation, it was home to multiple resident families. During the renovation of Moon Lake, the municipal government decided to restore the residence, relocating and resettling all residents. Today, the newly restored Jiang residence, with its dark tiles and white walls, has the Chinese characters “Jiang Residence” inscribed above the main gate by Mao Yihu, former vice-chairman of the Ningbo Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). The side gate displays three bronze plaques: Ningbo CPPCC Friendship Association, Ningbo CPPCC Calligraphy and Painting Academy, and Ningbo CPPCC Poetry Society. It has become an important venue for patriotic united front activities of the Ningbo CPPCC.

Jiang Jieqing (1875–1936), whose given name was Ruisheng, courtesy name Jieqing, art name Xihou, alias Qian’an, and family name Zhoukang, was the half-brother of Chiang Kai-shek, born in 1875 — 12 years older than Chiang. His birth mother was Chiang Kai-shek’s father’s first wife.

Jiang Jieqing was a scholar from a local Confucian school and later graduated from Siming Specialized School with a degree in law and politics. When Chiang Kai-shek began to rise in prominence, Jiang Jieqing benefited from the connection and served as a judge at the Taizhou District Court, a judge at the Guangzhou Local Tribunal, the magistrate of Yingde County, and later as Supervisor of Zhejiang Customs and a member of the Zhejiang Provincial Government. Yuehu Subdistrict: Established in 1992, Yuehu Subdistrict in Haishu District is located in the center of Ningbo.
