Zhou Wei’s Residence

Zhou Wei’s Residence, built during the Ming Dynasty, is located in Xinzhuang Village, Gaoqiao Town, Haishu District. The structure faces south and covers an area of 243.11 square meters.

Zhou Wei, also known as Wei Han, was a successful candidate in the imperial examinations in the 14th year of the Zhengde Emperor’s reign, and served as an upright official.

The residence currently consists of just the central hallway section — a single-eave, flush-gable-roofed high-rise building with three bays and two side passages. The central bay has four pillars and seven rafters, with five spans of lifted beams and a single step front and back, while the side bays have five pillars reaching the ground, and the end bays have seven pillars reaching the ground. The building is tall and spacious, constructed with large timber materials. The main columns are made from precious woods including catalpa, sandalwood, fir, and agarwood (according to local sources, it is agarwood, but it might also be nanmu). These elements give the structure significant historical, artistic, and scientific research value. It was designated as a cultural relic protection unit at the district level (ninth batch) of Yinzhou District in September 2010, and was transferred to Haishu District following the administrative division adjustment of Ningbo City in 2016.
