Tianyi Pavilion Dongming Cottage

Dongming Cottage was the book collection site of Fan Qin before the construction of Tianyi Pavilion. Fan Qin (1506–1585), courtesy name Yaoqin and style name Dongming, hence named his study “Dongming Cottage.” The current Dongming Cottage was rebuilt in 1980.

Fan Qin had a passion for collecting books. During his official travels, he paid special attention to searching for and acquiring local literature wherever he went. Later, as his book collection grew, Dongming Cottage could no longer accommodate it, so Fan Qin decided to rebuild a book tower to the east of his residence, which later became the world-renowned Tianyi Pavilion.

Although today Tianyi Pavilion is hailed as the oldest existing library in China, we should not overlook Dongming Cottage. It can be said that it was Dongming Cottage that laid the foundation for Tianyi Pavilion. Without Dongming Cottage, there would be no Tianyi Pavilion, renowned throughout history.

Tianyi Community: The Tianyi Community area spans from Yan Yue Street to the east, Liuting Street to the south, Changchun Road to the west, and Sanbanqiao Street to the north, covering a total area of approximately 0.26 square kilometers.

The Tianyi Community Neighborhood Committee was established on June 23, 2001. The community has 2,213 residential households, with a registered population of over 5,800, including around 3,307 permanent residents and over 1,100 temporary residents. There are 1,218 residents aged 60 and above. The community consists of 32 buildings (a mix of old and new structures) and 105 traditional lane houses.
