Former Residence of Tu Youyou

The former residence of Tu Youyou is a cultural tourism attraction.

Tu Youyou was born on December 30, 1930, in Ningbo, and this is her ancestral home. No. 26 Kaiming Street is currently the only surviving modern-era building on this street. Its owner was Yao Qingsan (1911–1989), an economist who once served as president of the Hong Kong–Ningbo Fellowship Association, and Yao Qingsan was Tu Youyou’s uncle. As a child, Tu Youyou lived at her grandmother’s house and grew up there.

Reporters learned that the Yao residence is a historic building preserved from the early Republican era and is currently well-maintained. The main structure faces south and consists of a front hall, main hall, main building, and rear wing.

Tu Youyou studied at both Xiaoshi High School and Ningbo High School, where she was a notable alumnus. In the spring of 1951, she graduated from the senior high school of Ningbo High School and was admitted to Peking Medical College (now Peking University Health Science Center) the same year.

Over the years, she has been engaged in research on traditional Chinese medicine and integrated Chinese-Western medicine. Her outstanding contribution was the discovery of artemisinin, a drug used to treat malaria, which has saved millions of lives worldwide, especially in developing countries. In September 2011, Tu Youyou was awarded the Lasker Award, often referred to as the "American Nobel Prize." This marked the first time a Chinese scientist received the Lasker Award and was also the highest-level international award in the field of biomedical science achieved by China’s scientific community to date. The Lasker Award is also regarded as a predictor of the Nobel Prize.

On October 5, 2015, at 17:30 Beijing time, the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was announced at the Karolinska Institute. Irish medical researcher William Campbell, Japanese scholar Satoshi Ōmura, and Chinese pharmacologist Tu Youyou were awarded the prize.
