Yuehu Shengyuan is located in the old city center of Ningbo. Originally the historic Yujiaxiang neighborhood, the project borders the new Jiefang South Road to the east, Zhenming Road to the west and south, and the existing County School Residential Area to the north. It is also close to the historic and cultural Yuehu area, making it one of the few remaining traditional historical neighborhoods in downtown Ningbo.

Covering a total land area of approximately 39,000 square meters and a total construction area of about 50,000 square meters, Yuehu Shengyuan is one of the key projects under Ningbo’s “Central Enhancement” strategy, as well as the first protective development project to commence among the eight historic cultural blocks outlined in Ningbo’s Purple Line Planning.

In 2005, the Ningbo Municipal Government designated eight “Purple Line” protected areas, including the Yuehu Shengyuan historic cultural block.

Drawing inspiration from traditional Jiangnan-style courtyard architecture and embodying the spirit of Ningbo’s merchant culture, Yuehu Shengyuan shoulders the dual mission of “historic preservation” and “value recreation.” Upholding the development philosophy of “preservation, inheritance, innovation, and transcendence,” the project retains the original charm of Jiangnan courtyards while infusing them with new commercial value. The area gathers one municipal-level cultural heritage site, two district-level cultural heritage sites, two municipal-level cultural heritage points, and 15 historic buildings—such as the former residence of Yang Fang, Ningbo’s first comprador of the modern era; the Lingying Temple, originally built in the Tang Dynasty and renovated in the Republic of China; the former home of Chen Yumen, the inventor of Chinese mahjong; the Sheng Family Flower Hall, a district-level heritage site; the ancestral hall of the Li family of Eastern Zhejiang School; the residence of Li Kan’yu, a Ningbo-born Shanghai-based businessman; the home of Dong Meisheng, a textile factory owner; and the house of Chen Bingheng, the head of the post and telecommunications bureau during the Republican era—each reflecting aspects of life and historical development in a particular period of Ningbo’s history.

Together, these structures form a relatively complete and culturally rich historic neighborhood that preserves a significant amount of information on the lifestyle and developmental history of a particular phase of Ningbo. They vividly reflect the city’s humanistic legacy and enduring vitality.

Yuehu Shengyuan is China’s first commercial block transformed based on the design of Jiangnan-style courtyards. As we know, Shanghai Xintiandi is based on Shikumen architecture, Nanjing 1912 on Republican-era architecture, and Chengdu Kuahuaxiang on northern siheyuan (courtyard) architecture. Thus, Yuehu Shengyuan has also pioneered a new model for the redevelopment of old urban areas in China—one that holds strong potential for replication nationwide.

An ancient neighborhood’s stunning transformation allows us to nostalgically look back at Ningbo’s past while enjoying a contemporary lifestyle. Yuehu Shengyuan is an urban space that continues the threads of humanistic history and preserves historical memories, allowing the “past” to remain within Yuehu Shengyuan and be newly interpreted through modern spatial expressions.

Yuehu Subdistrict: Established in 1992, Yuehu Subdistrict in Haishu District is located in the heart of Ningbo. It stretches from Jiefang Road in the east to Changchun Road in the west, neighbors the five-star Nanyuan Hotel to the south, and borders Zhongshan Road to the north. It was formed through the merger of three former subdistricts: County School, Huxi, and Cangqiao. The area covers 2.07 square kilometers, has 16,492 residential households with a population of 41,775, and includes seven community neighborhood committees.
