Moon Lake Mosque

Moon Lake Mosque is a cultural heritage protection unit of Zhejiang Province.

The mosque is located at No. 18 Houying Lane, Tianyi Community, Yuehu Subdistrict, Haishu District, Ningbo City. In 2011, it was designated as part of the sixth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage protection units. Originally built during the Xianping era of the Song Dynasty (998–1003), it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, with the current structure dating back to 1699 when it was reconstructed on its present site during the 38th year of the Kangxi reign in the Qing Dynasty. The mosque faces east and features a rectangular layout, primarily organized along a central axis and symmetrical design, emphasizing planar composition. It consists of a main gate, the Moon-Gazing Tower, and other structures.

Since the Song Dynasty, with the opening of Ningbo (then known as Mingzhou) port to foreign trade, many Arabs and Persians came to Ningbo for commerce and cultural exchange. Some settled in the city and brought with them the Islamic faith, making the mosque a historical testament to Ningbo’s role as a port city.

Tianyi Community: The area of Tianyi Community extends from Yanyue Street in the east, borders Liuting Street to the south, reaches Changchun Road to the west, and neighbors Sanbanqiao Street to the north, covering a total area of approximately 0.26 square kilometers.

The Neighborhood Committee of Tianyi Community was established on June 23, 2001. The jurisdiction includes 2,213 residential households, with a registered population of over 5,800, of which about 3,307 are permanent residents and more than 1,100 are temporary residents. There are 1,218 residents aged 60 or above. The community has 32 residential buildings (a mix of older and newer structures) and 105 traditional lane houses.
