County Temple

The County Temple is a cultural heritage site protected by Ningbo City.

The County Temple is located at No. 22 Xianxue Street, Haishu District, Ningbo City. In 1981, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage site of Ningbo. Commonly known as the Old City God Temple, it was originally the "Imperial Tutor Hall" from the Yuan Dynasty. It was destroyed by fire in the fourth year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1371), after which the county magistrate Zhang Qi relocated it to its current site and rebuilt it as a temple. The existing temple structure was reconstructed in the tenth year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1884).

The temple once served as a center for public gatherings, discussions, and trade in Ningbo, making it of significant historical importance for the study of Ningbo’s local chronicles and temple architecture. In June of the second year of the Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1645), patriotic figures such as Qian Sule, Zhang Cangshui, and Dong Zhining gathered several thousand people here to launch an uprising against the Qing army’s invasion of Zhejiang. It is one of Ningbo’s renowned ancient architectural landmarks and also serves as a commemorative heritage site.
