Former Site of Hanxiang Academy

The former site of Hanxiang Academy is a Haishu District cultural heritage protection unit.

The former site of Hanxiang Academy is located at No. 55 Cangji Street, Haishu District. In December 2010, it was designated as part of the fifth batch of Haishu District-level cultural heritage protection units. The main building faces south and features a spiral wooden staircase in the teaching area. On the west side of the second floor, an original classroom has been preserved, complete with its original desks, chairs, and laboratory cabinets. At the front of the podium stands a wax figure of Chen Shengzuo, one of the founders of the academy. On the inner side of the west perimeter wall, there are two stone steles that are epitaphs of descendants of the Chen family. On the eastern side of the corridor downstairs in the teaching building, there is a “Hanxiang Academy Stele Inscription.”

The school was originally founded in the 12th year of the Tongzhi reign during the Qing Dynasty (1873) by Chen Yushou, a successful candidate in the imperial examinations from Cangji in the southern suburbs of Yinxian County (now Taiyang Community, Yuehu Subdistrict). It was destroyed by fire in 1924 and later rebuilt as the Hanxiang School buildings on the "Feigai Garden" estate purchased by Chen Shengzuo, the grandson of Chen Yushou.
