Former Residence of Venerable Master Yuanying

The former residence of Venerable Master Yuanying is a cultural relic protection unit of Haishu District.

The former residence of Venerable Master Yuanying is located within the Jiedaijiang Temple in Dongzhou Natural Village, Lugang Village, Gaoqiao Town, Haishu District. Based on architectural style, structure, and the era in which its owner lived, it is estimated to have been built during the Republican period. The main structure faces south and features a traditional courtyard layout, covering an area of 232.36 square meters. It consists of a main hall and side rooms on both sides.

The main hall is a single-eave, flush-gable roof building with three bays and one aisle. The aisle is located on the westernmost side. The central bay features a post-and-lintel structure with five beams and single-step beams at the front and back. The side bays use central columns with a through-tenon structure and have five pillars and seven rafters in depth. The aisle is nine rafters deep with seven pillars. The floor of the main hall is paved with tiles decorated with maple leaf patterns. The side rooms are located on either side of the courtyard, each with two bays and three rafters in depth, using a post-and-lintel structure. The second-floor flooring is adorned with decorative wooden railings resembling huqin (Chinese fiddle) tuning pegs.

The former residence of Venerable Master Yuanying was built by the late Venerable Master Yuanying, former president of the Buddhist Association. The second floor of the main hall still houses a memorial hall dedicated to the Venerable Master, preserving a large number of his personal belongings and relics. Notably, the jade Buddha that the Master brought back from Myanmar upon his return to China in 1916 is still preserved here.

The layout of the former residence of Venerable Master Yuanying remains intact and is well-preserved. It is surrounded by high walls on all sides, and the beams and brackets feature exquisitely carved and vivid designs, giving it significant historical and cultural value. In September 2010, it was designated as the ninth batch of district-level cultural relic protection units in Yinzhou District. In 2016, it was incorporated into Haishu District following an adjustment in Ningbo’s administrative divisions.
