Ancient Huissha Sluice Site

The ancient Huissha Sluice Site is a cultural heritage site under the protection of Haishu District.

The ancient Huissha Sluice Site is located on the west side of Tashan Village in Yinjiang Town, Haishu District, upstream of the Tashan Weir. It was first built during the Song Dynasty. Currently, four sluice groove pillars remain. The second pillar on the western side is engraved with a “water level gauge,” serving as a standard for controlling water levels. The third pillar bears the three characters “迴沙闸” (Huissha Sluice). The four stone pillars range in height from 2.63 to 2.83 meters, with cross-sections measuring 0.5 meters to 0.52 meters. The sluice groove is square, 0.11 meters in size, and the central gate opening is 3.57 meters wide, while the two side openings are 3.02 meters wide.

The Huissha Sluice is one of the components of the Tashan Weir hydraulic facility. It has long worked together with the Tashan Weir to divert and discharge water, as well as to retain and store it, providing important physical evidence for the study of ancient Chinese water conservancy projects.

In the second year of the Chunyou era of the Song Dynasty (1242), Chen Kai, the prefect, built a three-bay Huissha Sluice 150 meters northwest of the Tashan Weir due to soil erosion and silt accumulation in the upstream ponds and canals. The sluice was constructed to block sand from entering the harbor and prevent blockages.

In 2010, it was announced as the ninth batch of district-level cultural heritage sites in Yinzhou District. In 2016, following the adjustment of Ningbo’s administrative divisions, it was placed under Haishu District.

Yinjiang Town: Located at the eastern foot of Siming Mountain, Yinjiang Town is a major town on the western edge of the Yinxī Plain and a renowned historical and cultural town with a history of a thousand years. It is 25 kilometers from downtown Ningbo.
