Ancient Flood Bay Pond Site

The Ancient Flood Bay Pond Site is a cultural heritage site protected by Haishu District.

The Ancient Flood Bay Pond Site is situated in the northeastern part of Tashan Weir Natural Village, Tashan Weir Village, Yinjiang Town, Haishu District, about 500 meters from Tashan Weir. According to the "General Gazetteer of Yin County," a water gate was once installed here in ancient times. In the autumn of the third year of the Chunyou era of the Song Dynasty (1243), a dike was built here, standing two zhang tall, one zhang and two chi wide, twelve zhang long, using 372 workdays and costing 87 guan and 290 wen. In the third year of the Baoyou era (1255), Wu Qian, the military commissioner, constructed three dams at this location—one by the river, one by the stream, and one in between. Later, the middle and outer dams were submerged by the river, leaving only the one by the stream, which came to be known as the “Flood Bay Pond.” It underwent several renovations and expansions in the 41st year of the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty (1776), the 7th year of the Xianfeng era (1857), and the 13th year of the Republic of China (1924). The original pond was 105.6 meters long; after the 1924 renovation, it extended to 320 meters in length and 4.16 meters in height, forming a sturdy stone embankment. After the 1970s, due to the dismantling of the official embankment and the installation of barriers upstream and downstream, the pond was partially converted into a sluice gate on its eastern section in 1988, becoming the Flood Bay Drainage Sluice to enhance flood discharge capacity. Today, only about 180 meters of the western stone embankment remains, built with stone slabs and covered with flagstones.

The Flood Bay Pond has a long history and is one of the important auxiliary structures of Tashan Weir. It has been included in the protection plan for Tashan Weir. In September 2010, it was designated as the ninth batch of district-level cultural heritage sites in Yinjiang District, and when Ningbo’s administrative divisions were adjusted in 2016, it was placed under the jurisdiction of Haishu District.

Tashan Weir Village: Tashan Weir Village is located in the center of Yinjiang Town and consists of three natural villages. The village has a total of 783 households and a population of 1,724. It covers a cultivated land area of 1,306 mu and a total forested area of 2,400 mu. The village has 50 Party members, divided among 16 villager groups, with a total of 56 villager representatives.

Tashan Weir Village is named after Tashan Weir, one of China’s four great ancient hydraulic engineering projects. As a key hydraulic hub in the western part of Yin County, Tashan Weir has remained functional for over a thousand years and continues to play an important role in blocking saltwater, storing freshwater, draining floods, and providing irrigation.
