The Chaijing Stone Carvings

The Chaijing Stone Carvings are a cultural relic protection unit of Haishu District.

The Chaijing Stone Carvings are located in front of the mountain gate of Changshou Temple in Shencun Village, Jishi Port Town, Haishu District. They consist of two imperial edict steles and a stone horse, all carved during the Ming Dynasty's Jiajing era. The two steles are placed side by side: one was erected in the 18th year of the Jiajing reign (1539). Its top bears the three seal-script characters “敕命碑” (Imperial Edict Stele), and the entire stele is 1.88 meters long and 0.94 meters wide. The full text is written in regular script, comprising 49 lines. Its content is divided into upper and lower parts: the upper part is the imperial edict, and the lower part is Chai Jing’s reply. The other stele was erected in the 23rd year of the Jiajing reign (1544). Its dimensions, top inscription, font style, and form are identical to the previous one. The upper part also contains the imperial edict, while the lower part is the “Enrui Record” inscribed by Chai Jing. The stone horse is positioned in front of the two steles. It stands 1.5 meters tall, is 1.9 meters long, and has a base 0.4 meters wide. The carving is exquisitely detailed and the figure is vividly rendered.

Currently, both steles and the stone horse are well preserved. The inscriptions on the steles feature smooth, neatly written characters with vigorous and powerful brushwork, while the stone horse is lifelike in form and holds significant historical and documentary value. In 2005, it was designated as a district-level cultural relic protection site of Yinzhou District. In 2010, it was listed as the ninth batch of district-level cultural relic protection units in Yinzhou District. In 2016, following the adjustment of Ningbo’s administrative divisions, it was incorporated into Haishu District.

Shencun is located in the western part of Haishu and borders Yuncun Village of Dayin Town in Yuyao City. The village is surrounded by mountains on three sides, boasts a beautiful environment, fresh air, and a long history. It is home to over 500 households with a total population of around 1,500, cultivating over 1,000 acres of paddy fields and managing more than 5,000 acres of forested hills.

Since the reform and opening-up, Shencun Village has undergone tremendous changes. Dilapidated, low, crowded, and dim houses of the past have been replaced by neat, bright, and modern buildings. Transportation has greatly improved, with bus services now extending to the village.
