Huaxing Quarry

Huaxing Quarry is a cultural heritage site protected by Haishu District.

Huaxing Quarry is located to the south of Huaxing Quarry Natural Village in Meiyuan Village, Yinzhou Town, Haishu District. The entire quarry has a fan-shaped layout with a diameter of approximately 55.58 meters. It is now abandoned and flooded.

The Meiyuan stone quarries have a long mining history. Based on the surviving imperial stele inscribed by Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty and the stone carvings at Dongqian Lake, their history can be traced back at least to the Song Dynasty. Due to limitations in ancient mining capabilities, only top-down mining methods could be used, mostly open-pit mining, leaving behind mostly circular or fan-shaped ponds. The quarry discovered this time is a remnant from the Republican era, owned by Xie Guisheng, a capitalist from our district during that period. The stone extracted was used in the construction of Ningbo’s first highway in transportation history—the Yin-Feng Road.

The discovery of Huaxing Quarry provides first-hand physical evidence for studying the mining history of Meiyuan Stone in our district as well as the development of transportation infrastructure in our city, holding certain historical value. In September 2010, it was designated as the ninth batch of district-level cultural heritage sites under Yinzhou District. In 2016, following the administrative division adjustment of Ningbo City, it came under the jurisdiction of Haishu District.
