Nizhi Weir

Nizhi Weir is a cultural heritage site protected by Haishu District.

Nizhi Weir is located at the foot of Jianfeng Mountain in Zhaojiazhuang Natural Village, Xixia Village, Hengjie Town, Haishu District. It is the second-largest water conservancy barrier in the Yinzhou western region of the Siming Mountains. This overflow dam serves to block the waters of Zhuangjia Stream, prevent floods, store fresh water, and divert water flow. According to Xie Guoqi’s article “An Investigation of the Ancient Water Conservancy Project Nizhi Weir in Yinzhou West,” published in Volume 9 of Yinzhou Culture and History, it was initially built as an earthen dam during the Qi and Liang dynasties, and by the Republican era had been completely reconstructed in stone.

The existing dam is trapezoidal in shape, stretching approximately 45 meters in length and 2.68 meters in width from north to south across the Wuling and Taoyuan stream sections. Its eastern side features a stepped structure that provides solid support. The northern side of the dam includes both open and covered channels to irrigate fields to the north, along with sluice gates for water control.

Nizhi Weir has a long history and is one of the earliest large-scale water conservancy facilities in our district. It holds significant research value for studying the development of water conservancy not only in our area but also in Ningbo. In September 2010, it was designated as a Cultural Relics Protection Unit at the district level in the ninth round of such designations in Yinzhou District, and it was incorporated into Haishu District following the administrative division adjustment of Ningbo in 2016.
