Site of the Rear Hospital of the Eastern Zhejiang Guerrilla Column

The site of the rear hospital of the Eastern Zhejiang Guerrilla Column is a cultural heritage site protected by Haishu District.

The site of the rear hospital of the Eastern Zhejiang Guerrilla Column is located in the mountain valley of Wangjiaowu within Shangheng Natural Village, Shiping Village, Zhangshui Town, Haishu District. According to veterans’ recollections, it was established around 1948. The site is surrounded by mountains on all sides, with a small stream flowing from west to east on the southern side and Wangjiaowu Mountain to the north. The main structure faces south and is divided into three parts, arranged from west to east as the kitchen, operating room, and inpatient ward. There are four levels of foundation with height differences of 0.7 meters, 1.8 meters, and 0.5 meters respectively. The original buildings were constructed using local bamboo and wood, with bamboo mat flooring. After being abandoned, the area was mainly used as woodland.

According to veteran party member Zhang Guoqing, all medical supplies for the rear hospital were purchased by underground party members from places such as Yinjiang. Zhang Jiyan, an elderly local who participated in battles with the guerrilla column, also recalled that injured guerrilla fighters from battles in areas such as Longguan and Fenghua were transported along Guanding and other routes to the rear hospital. At its peak, the hospital had two doctors, Shi Dongban (phonetic) and Huang Changfu, and at one time accommodated dozens of injured soldiers. The rear hospital operated in Shangheng for just over a year before being forced to relocate urgently due to betrayal, after which it was abandoned. Remnants of the sites where the injured were hidden and transferred still exist in places such as Zhangxi, providing firsthand physical evidence of this historical event.

The discovery of the site of the rear hospital of the Eastern Zhejiang Guerrilla Column fills a gap in the history of revolutionary architecture in our district and provides strong evidence for studying the struggle history of the Eastern Zhejiang Guerrilla Column in the Siming Mountain area. It was announced as the ninth batch of district-level cultural heritage protection units in Yinzhou District in September 2010 and was incorporated into Haishu District following the adjustment of Ningbo’s administrative divisions in 2016.

Shiping Village: Shiping Village is located southwest of Zhangshui Town Government, about 25 kilometers from the town center, and is classified as a high-mountain poverty-stricken village. The village consists of three natural villages: Shangheng, Licang, and Waicang, with a permanent population of 370 people, 177 households, and an office located in Shiping. It covers a land area of 219 mu and a forested area of 4,415 mu. The main livelihoods of the farmers are tea planting, bamboo cultivation, and flower and tree growing.
