Military Tunnel 401

Military Tunnel 401 is a cultural heritage site protected by Haishu District.

Military Tunnel 401 is located to the east of Banjing Natural Village in Meilong Village, Haishu District, nestled at the foot of Banjing Mountain. Constructed due to the wartime preparedness needs of the Ministry of National Defense, excavation began in 1954 and continued until 1974, when the state of military readiness ended. As no war occurred, the tunnel was never used and is now abandoned.

The tunnel runs from east to west, almost traversing half of Banjing Mountain, with a total length of over 300 meters. It is fully equipped with facilities including a meeting room, storage rooms, side chambers, water pools, machine gun ports, and ventilation shafts. There are three steel bulletproof doors at each entrance and exit, each 5 centimeters thick. Outside the tunnel, there is an office building consisting of 12 bays, which was used for commanding operations at the time.

The military tunnel was excavated for preparedness purposes and witnessed the intense cross-strait tensions of the time, holding certain historical significance. In September 2010, it was designated as part of the ninth batch of district-level cultural heritage sites in Yinzhou District, and in 2016, following an administrative division adjustment in Ningbo, it was placed under the jurisdiction of Haishu District.
