Maonuo Ancient Tree Cluster

The Maonuo Ancient Tree Cluster is a cultural relic protected at the district level by Haishu District.

The Maonuo Ancient Tree Cluster is located in Maonuo Village, Zhangshui Town, Haishu District, Ningbo City. These ancient trees are distributed around the village, covering an extensive area. There is a significant number of trees over 100 years old. According to incomplete statistics, there are no fewer than 90 trees in the village that are over 400 years old, including species such as golden larch, torreya tree, ginkgo, and maple. One golden larch was rated among Ningbo’s “Top Ten Famous Ancient Trees” in 1998. This tree stands 51 meters tall, has a chest circumference of 4.3 meters, covers a crown area of 29.7 square meters, and is estimated to be over 500 years old. It holds the record for the largest single-tree crown area in China. Other ancient trees also have chest circumferences ranging from 3 to 5 meters.

The local community in Maonuo has a longstanding tradition of protecting ancient and famous trees. A public prohibition stele erected during the Daoguang era still remains in the village. In September 2010, it was designated as part of the ninth batch of district-level cultural relics protected by Yinzhou District. In 2016, following the administrative division adjustment of Ningbo City, it was placed under the jurisdiction of Haishu District.
