Miscellaneous stone carvings including the Lü Ke Memorial Archway
Miscellaneous stone carvings including the Lü Ke Memorial Archway are a cultural relic protection unit of Haishu District.
Miscellaneous stone carvings including the Lü Ke Memorial Archway are located in Pan’ao, Shanjiazhuang Village, Jishigang Town, Haishu District. According to the Comprehensive Gazetteer of Yin County, they date back to the Ming Dynasty. After the liberation, the tomb was severely damaged, and the stone carvings and archway were relocated to various places. The original stone horses, stone tigers, and stone sheep were moved to the Tiantong Forest Farm, the memorial archway to the foot of the Tuyong Tomb, and one upper-body statue of a civil official to the fruit farm. Only the tomb chamber and the worship platform remain at the site, where stone column bases of ornamental pillars and stone railings can still be found. The structure of the tomb chamber remains relatively intact, but there are evidence of grave robbery, and the upper body of a civil official figure was found broken in two on the left front side of the chamber.
Lü Ke, courtesy name Rongzi, was a native of Yin County. In the ninth year of the Zhengde era of the Ming Dynasty (1514), he passed the imperial examination and was appointed as the Chief of the Imperial Carriages Office in Nanjing. He eventually rose to the position of Provincial Administration Commissioner of Sichuan and served as the regional inspector of Baoding. Wherever he went, he was able to curb extravagance, eliminate corruption, and maintain clean governance and social stability. Later, because he refused to accept bribes demanded by powerful eunuchs and provincial governors, he was dismissed from office and returned to his hometown.
Lü Ke is one of the important historical figures in our district. Although his tomb has been severely damaged, the remaining structures and layout still reflect the funeral customs of official families, offering certain reference value for the study of the evolution of official burial customs. In September 2010, it was designated as the ninth batch of district-level cultural relic protection units in Yinzhou District. In 2016, it was reassigned to Haishu District following the administrative division adjustment of Ningbo City.
