Tomb of Fan Wenhu

The Tomb of Fan Wenhu is a cultural relic protection unit of Haishu District.

The Tomb of Fan Wenhu is located on the north side of Miaojia'ao Natural Village, Simingshan Village, Jishigang Town, Haishu District. It was built in the spring of the fourth year of the Xuantong reign of the Qing Dynasty. The main structure faces south and consists of a round tomb, which is composed of two parts: the burial chamber and the sacrificial platform.

The sacrificial platform in front of the tomb is semi-circular and paved with square stone slabs. Curved railings with rounded corner pillars are installed on both sides. Two tomb marker posts were originally placed at the front but have now been destroyed. The tombstone is inscribed with "Tomb of the Unconventional Scholar Fan," with the upper inscription reading "Spring of the Ji Mao Year" and the signature "Written by Gao Zhenxiao." The wings of the tombstone feature an account of Mr. Fan Wenhu’s life: the right side was written by his friend Zheng Wenliang, and the left side was calligraphed by Feng Hongshou of Cixi; additionally, there is a couplet inscribed on the wings, reading "In the depths of white clouds, I find my place; when black calamity arrives, I let it be." The entire stele stands 1.59 meters tall, is 0.2 meters thick, and the railings are 0.5 meters high.

Fan Wenhu was a renowned traditional Chinese medicine practitioner in Ningbo, known for his exceptional medical skills; Gao Zhenxiao was the last imperial scholar of the Qing Dynasty and a celebrated calligrapher. This discovery fills a gap in our district’s cultural heritage. In September 2010, it was announced as the ninth batch of district-level cultural relic protection units in Yinzhou District, and in 2016, it was transferred to Haishu District following the municipal administrative division adjustment.
