Huanggonglin Temple

Huanggonglin Temple is a cultural heritage site protected by Haishu District.

Huanggonglin Temple, a Qing Dynasty structure, is located in Gulin Village, Gulin Town, Haishu District. According to historical records, the temple was originally dedicated to Huanggu. It was destroyed by fire during the Kangxi reign and rebuilt in the ninth year of the Xianfeng era, after which it was rededicated to Xia Huanggong of the Han Dynasty. It underwent renovation again in the 29th year of the Guangxu reign. The temple consists of a connected four-courtyard complex made up of a gate tower, front hall, middle hall, and rear hall. Its depth measures 70.6 meters, the total width is 24.1 meters, and the total area is 1,700 square meters, making it one of the grandest temple structures in our district.

The first section, the gate tower, features seven bays, with three central bays forming the main gate and side towers on both sides. Behind the gate tower is a stage, whose eaves and beams are constructed with a combination of five-tiered bracket sets (dougong) and ang elements. The stage ceiling features a spiral, wave-patterned caisson ceiling adorned with intricate decorations. The second section is the front hall, consisting of three bays, two corridors, and two wing rooms. The third section is the middle hall, in front of which there is another stage flanked by viewing stands. The fourth section is the rear hall, made up of five bays and two corridors. The entire architectural complex is grand in scale, with a well-proportioned central axis layout and tightly structured construction. Most of the main stone pillars are inscribed with couplets. The beams, brackets, and other components are carved with images of birds and beasts, flowers and landscapes, as well as scenes from historical figures and stories. Because the temple was long used as a grain storage facility, many of the carvings with significant artistic value were covered with oyster-shell lime. In September 2010, it was designated as the ninth batch of district-level cultural heritage sites in Yinzhou District, and in 2016, it was transferred to Haishu District following an administrative division adjustment in Ningbo City.
