The Mansion of the Wan Family

The Mansion of the Wan Family is a protected cultural heritage site of Ningbo.

The Mansion of the Wan Family is located at No. 53 Shangshu Street, Haishu District, Ningbo. In September 1999, it was designated as one of the second batch of municipal-level cultural heritage sites in Ningbo.

Historical research shows that the building was constructed during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty and was built by Wan Chengxun, son of Wan Yan. The Wan family was a prominent clan in Ningbo, producing many notable figures. Wan Yan was the great-grandson of Wan Bangfu, owner of Baiyun Village — a sacred site of the Eastern Zhejiang School — and the nephew of Wan Sitong.

The main structure faces south and features a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof. It is a courtyard-style building that reflects the traditional residential architecture of the Jiangnan region. The main hall uses bamboo-strip mud walls for partitioning, which is a construction technique from the early Qing Dynasty.

In 1989, Mr. Wan Chung-kwong, the 20th-generation descendant of the Wan family and a well-known figure in Hong Kong, donated two plaques inscribed with “Hanlin” (Academy of Scholars) and “Mianli Hall,” which were hung respectively at the main gate and the central room of the main hall.
