Zhou Residence on Dayuan Shuyuan Lane

The Zhou Residence on Dayuan Shuyuan Lane is a protected cultural heritage site of Ningbo.

The Zhou Residence is located at No. 9, Dayuan Shuyuan Lane, Haishu District, Ningbo. In September 1999, it was designated as part of the second batch of municipal-level cultural heritage conservation sites in Ningbo. It is a Ming Dynasty building. The main structure faces south and consists of the main house and an eastern wing, covering a total area of 390 square meters. The main section features a single-eave, flush-gable roof, with six bays, four columns, and five purlins. The single-step and double-step beams are crafted in a flat style with arched beams. The floor is paved with bluestone slabs laid in a staggered pattern. The eastern wing also has a single-eave, flush-gable roof, with two bays, three columns, and four purlins. According to local accounts, the owner of the residence was surnamed Zhou, who served as an official in the Ming Dynasty court and had close ties with Yan Song.

The residence is free of ornate carvings, presenting a simple and elegant style that reflects the characteristics of Ming Dynasty architecture. It is a rare example of a Ming-era residential building on the western shore of Moon Lake and holds significant value for preservation.

Zhou Jinbiao, male, born in 1847, styled Jinzhen, was from the residence of the Censor Zhou on Dingxin Street, Cicheng. He was the first president of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, participated in the founding of Siming Commercial Bank, and passed away in 1927.

He was an ancestor of the famous Peking opera performer Zhou Xinfang, served four terms as the president of the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce, was the first president of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and was a key figure within the “Ningbo Business Group.”

Before leaving government service to engage in business, Zhou Jinbiao served as the magistrate of Guangchang County and Nanchang County in Jiangxi. In 1887, he left his official post to start a business in Shanghai.
