Yuan Family Residence

The Yuan Family Residence is a municipal cultural heritage conservation unit in Ningbo.

The Yuan Family Residence is located at No. 7, 14, and 16, Yu Island, Moon Lake Scenic Area, Haishu District, Ningbo City. In September 1999, it was announced as part of the second batch of municipal-level cultural heritage protection sites in Ningbo. It is a building from the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, with the main structure facing south and featuring, along its central axis, a reverse-facing building, main hall, wing rooms, and an auxiliary building, among others.

According to research, the original owner, Yuan Yangzhou, held the official position of Dao (a provincial administrative rank) during the Daoguang era. Yao Xie, a renowned literary figure of the Qing Dynasty, once resided here for an extended period and named his dwelling "Zhenhu Caotang" (Pillow Lake Thatched Cottage). Together with literati from Ningbo, he formed the "Zhenhu Poetry Society," which gained considerable fame. The Yuan Family Residence is large in scale, well-preserved, and exhibits exquisite craftsmanship. It is representative among various types of buildings in the old city area and holds certain historical, scientific, and artistic value.
