Jiang’s Residence

Jiang’s Residence is a cultural heritage conservation site under the protection of Ningbo Municipality.

Jiang’s Residence is situated on the eastern shore of Moon Lake in Haishu District, Ningbo. In September 1999, it was listed as one of the second batch of municipal-level cultural heritage conservation sites in Ningbo. The surviving building dates from the Republican period and is relatively well preserved, featuring Western-style brick facades decorated with rose motifs, scroll-patterned brick short columns, and plum rain stone door frames. The central axis-aligned main structures consist of the main gate, front hall, and main house, forming an enclosed three-sided courtyard. The front hall has a flush-gable roof with "Guanyin hood" gable walls, the ends of which retain remnants of polychrome paintings. The veranda of the central bay features exquisitely crafted wrought-iron railings, and the exterior walls are finished with traditional single-dormer clear-water gable walls.

Research indicates that this residence was once the home of Chiang Kai-shek’s elder half-brother, Chiang Chieh-sheng.

Chiang Chieh-sheng (1875–1936), also known as Rui-sheng, with the courtesy name Chieh-ch’ing, literary name Hsi-hou, alias Ch’ien-an, and registered name Chou-k’ang, was Chiang Kai-shek’s half-brother from the same father. Born in 1875, he was exactly 12 years older than Chiang Kai-shek. His birth mother was the first wife of Chiang Kai-shek’s father.

Chiang Chieh-sheng originally held the scholarly title of “Jun Xiang Sheng” (a local degree holder), and later graduated from Siming Specialized School with a degree in law and politics. When Chiang Kai-shek began rising in prominence, Chiang Chieh-sheng benefited from the connection and served as a judge at the Taizhou District Court, a judge at the Guangzhou Local Tribunal, the magistrate of Yingde County, and subsequently held positions such as Supervisor of the Zhejiang Customs and a member of the Zhejiang Provincial Government.
