Visiting Lu

Visiting Lu is a municipal-level cultural heritage conservation unit in Ningbo.

Visiting Lu is located at No. 16 and 17 Tianyi Lane, Haishu District, Ningbo City. In August 2003, it was designated as one of the third batch of municipal-level cultural heritage conservation sites in Ningbo. The buildings, dating from the Qing Dynasty and the Republican period, mainly face south and consist of a Qing-era traditional courtyard house (sanheyuan) and a small Western-style building from the Republican era. The main gate faces south, featuring a wooden door frame with corbels supporting the eaves beam. The lintel bears the cursive script characters “访庐” (Visiting Lu), written by Dai Jishi (Dai Chuan’s great-great-grandfather), a successful candidate in the imperial examinations during the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty. Visiting Lu was the former residence of Dai Chuan, who spent his childhood here.

Dai Chuan (1921–1990) was a renowned pioneer in China’s modern nuclear science field, making significant contributions to nuclear research. This residence is well-preserved, clearly reflects the architectural features of its time, and is the former home of a notable figure. It holds certain reference value for the study of the development history of local architecture in Ningbo and regional chronicles.
