Yu Residence on Henghe Street

The Yu Residence on Henghe Street is located at No. 72 Henghe Street, Haishu District, Ningbo. In August 2003, it was designated as part of the third batch of municipal-level cultural heritage protection sites in Ningbo. It is a building from the Republican era. The main structure faces east and sits to the west, with the original north-facing entrance gate inscribed with the characters “载庐” (Zailu, meaning “Carrying Abode”). Research indicates that the residence was built in the early years of the Republic of China and served as the Ningbo villa of prominent Republican figure Yu Qiaqing. The Yu Residence boasts exquisite craftsmanship, exhibiting a distinctive Sino-Western architectural style and clear features of its time, making it highly significant for studying the development history of modern architecture in the Ningbo area.

Yu Qiaqing (1867–1945), born in Shanjia Village, Longshan Town, Cixi, Zhejiang, started as an apprentice in Shanghai in his early years and went out onto the streets during the May Fourth Movement to persuade shops to reopen. In 1920, he co-founded the Shanghai Securities and Commodities Exchange and served as its chairman. In 1923, he was elected president of the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce. During the War of Resistance against Japan, he remained committed to patriotism and anti-Japanese efforts. After the Japanese occupied the concessions, he moved to Chongqing to manage transport along the Burma Road in support of the war effort. He passed away in Chongqing on April 26, 1945, and was buried in his hometown of Longshan.
